May 1944 : Sikh troops of the 4th Indian Infantry Division on the outskirts of Cassino town (Battle of Monte Cassino) in Italy after the retreat of the Germans. The 4th Indian Division had lost more than 3000 men in this battle.
Wotjek - The Soldier Bear. Wojtek - dubbed the "Soldier Bear" - was adopted by Polish troops and helped them carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war he lived in Scotland at Hutton in Berwickshire, before ending his days in Edinburgh Zoo.

A 500 lb. cigarette-smoking, beer-drinking brown bear named Wojtek was enlisted in and served in the Polish army during WWII. "Private Wojtek" helped the Polish win the brutal Battle of Monte Cassino, and was even promoted to corporal. Following the war, he retired in Scotland.
